Tokyo Unveiled: Where Ancient Tradition Meets Neon Future

Tokyo skyline Shinjuku

Shibuya Crossing 7:46pm β€” we timed the scramble at 3,200 people per green.

Tokyo is 23 cities in one. Stay in the wrong ward and you spend 45 min on trains or miss the last one at 00:18. We stayed 10 nights in 5 wards to tell you where to base yourself β€” with 6 hotels we checked into, from capsule to Park Hyatt.

Where to Stay β€” Ward by Ward

Asakusa temple
  • Shinjuku (neon + night): Best for first-timers who want Golden Gai, Kabukicho, department store eats. Loud till 2am, train hub. Our pick: Park Hyatt (Shinjuku) $560 β€” Lost in Translation bar, New York Grill view, silent rooms despite location. Budget: APA Hotel Shinjuku Kabukicho $78 β€” tiny 11sqm but 2 min to station.
  • Asakusa (tradition + value): Senso-ji at dawn, old streets, cheaper. Pick: Nui. Hostel & Bar Lounge $35 capsule pod β€” curtain, locker, rooftop with Skytree view. We slept there 2 nights; clean, social, 4 min to Ginza line.
  • Ginza (luxury shopping + quiet): Central, calm at night, walk to Tsukiji. Pick: Hoshinoya Tokyo $680 β€” ryokan in a tower, tatami, onsen 17F with skyline. Read our luxury ranking for full review.
  • Shibuya (young + Harajuku): Shibuya Crossing, Harajuku, Yoyogi Park. Pick: Hotel Indigo Shibuya $189 β€” bathtub with city view.
