40L carry-on: 10 days, 4 climates, 7kg — we weighed it.
I lived from a 40L bag for 32 days across Bali, Tokyo, Prague and Lisbon in 12–30°C. Total bag weight 6.8kg. Here's the capsule that worked — and the airport, insurance and green hacks that actually save money.
Tops: 3 quick-dry tees (Uniqlo Airism), 1 linen shirt, 1 merino sweater (worn on plane). Bottoms: 1 jogger pant, 1 shorts, 1 jeans. Shoes (worn): sneakers + packable sandals (no 4th shoe!). Layers: packable down + rain shell = covers 12°C Tokyo night to 30°C Bali.
Roll, don't fold. Packing cubes: top, bottom, tech. Underwear 4× merino — wash in sink, dry overnight with fan.
3-1-1 liquids: 100ml max, 1L bag — we use contact lens case for cream + perfume to save space. Lounge: Priority Pass via BCA Visa Infinite or CIMB — free entry CGK, SIN, NRT; food + shower saves hotel first night if red-eye. Empty bottle: Use water fountain after security, not $4 shop.

Light bag = free hands, no wait at belt, no fee. Green choices are often cheaper. And insurance is not optional after you see a ¥400,000 hospital bill in Japan.
