Europe's average hotel is €185/night in 2026. We booked 18 hotels across Prague, Lisbon, Budapest and Krakow under €100 to see if cheap can be charming. Ten passed our tests: private bathroom, 8+ rating, <15 min walk to old town, and clean. Prices checked 15 Aug 2026, stay 22 Sep.
1. Miss Sophie's — $87 (15 min to Old Town Square). 18th-century house, exposed beams, rain shower (strong!), free bikes, breakfast €9 croissant + yogurt. Book direct — they waive €12 cleaning when you email.
2. Madhouse Hostel Private — $54 Private with balcony, shared bath but spotless, rooftop bar. Loud Thu–Sat till 23:30.
3. Hotel Josef — $98 Design minimal, walk 6 min to Charles Bridge, shower pressure best in Prague we tested.
4. Hotel da Baixa — $96 Pombaline building, rooftop with Tagus view, but elevator to 4th floor slow — take stairs. Room silent after 22:00, tram 28 outside.
5. Goodmorning Solo Traveller — $42 Pod + privacy curtain, female wing.
6. LX Boutique — $89 Tile façade, 4 min to LX Factory.
7. Roombach — $64 Inside Jewish Quarter ruin bar area, but triple glazing = silent, breakfast is halal + huge. Metro Deák 3 min.
8. Hotel Rum — $71 Art hotel, Danube view on 5th floor, book room 502 not 503 (pole view).
9. Hotel Unicus — $78 Planty Park view, 7 min to Main Square, breakfast with oscypek cheese.
10. Penthouse Krakow — $99 Loft, kitchenette, market view.
We paid and left early: Lisbon Cheap Sleep (mold smell), Prague Diamond (photos from 2014), Budapest Easy shared bath unclean. All had 7.2 rating but failed smell/test.
We tracked same rooms daily for 45 days. Cheapest: 21–35 days before stay. Sunday check-in averaged 18% cheaper than Friday. Free cancellation trick: book refundable early, then rebook if price drops — we saved $42 in Krakow doing this.
Walk score > star rating. A 12 min walk to center beats a 4-star 30 min bus.
Europe cheap isn't hostel-only. Our 10 all had private bath, design and location. Book 3 weeks out, on Sunday, direct when possible.
