Introduction
Africa has a rich history and culture, which is evident in its many iconic landmarks. From a giant rock structure built thousands of years ago to one of the world’s largest waterfalls, there’s no shortage of things to see when you travel to Africa. So what are these famous African landmarks? Read on for details about five famous landmarks found on this continent:
The Sphinx
Located in Giza, Egypt, the Sphinx is a large monolith statue that was built by the ancient Egyptians. It is carved from a single piece of stone and it stands tall at 66 feet (20 m) high and 241 feet (73 m) long. The Sphinx’s exact age is unknown but it is believed to have been created during the reign of Khafre, who ruled between 2558 BC – 2532 BC.
The Sphinx has become an iconic symbol for Egyptian culture thanks to its appearance on many different forms of media including movies and TV shows such as Stargate SG-1 where it plays an important role in helping SG-1 travel back in time by creating a wormhole near its location which allows them access through space-time continuum so they can return home safely after defeating Ra who had plans on destroying Earth using nuclear missiles located inside his pyramid temple at Abu Simbel Temple Complex near Aswan Dam Lake
Victoria Falls
Victoria Falls is the largest waterfall in Africa and the second largest in the world. It’s located on the Zambezi River between Zimbabwe and Zambia, where it forms part of a border between those two countries. The falls are a major tourist attraction and one of only seven natural wonders of the world.
Vic falls was named after Queen Victoria by David Livingstone because he felt that she had done so much for his country during his visit there.
Table Mountain
Table Mountain is a flat-topped mountain forming a prominent landmark overlooking the city of Cape Town in South Africa. It’s considered one of the most iconic landmarks in Africa and has been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
Table Mountain is also home to the highest peak in Cape Town, named Lion’s Head (pictured above). This mountain gets its name from its resemblance to an African lion’s head when viewed from certain angles.
The Great Zimbabwe Ruins
The Great Zimbabwe Ruins are a UNESCO World Heritage Site located in southern Africa. The site was built by the Bantu people between the 11th and 15th centuries and is made up of granite stones.
The Okavango Delta
The Okavango Delta is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Africa’s most iconic landmarks. It’s located in Botswana, which makes it easy to visit if you’re traveling through southern Africa. The delta covers more than 5,500 square miles (14,000 square kilometers) and is home to thousands of animals and birds including hippos, elephants and crocodiles.
If you want to visit the Okavango Delta for bird watching or just see what it looks like during different seasons: winter or summer; I recommend doing so between January and April when there are fewer tourists around than during other times of year.
